Looking for an EASY-to-crochet hanging bat decoration for Halloween that doubles as a softie for kids? Learn how to crochet this low-sew flying bat plushie designed for absolute beginners, following a written pattern + tutorial as well. This crochet plushie bat has the hanging loop attached to its feet, so you can hang it in its iconic cave sleeping pose. You can crochet this bag either as a keychain by using cotton yarn or as a gift for kids using plush yarn.

Choose from the crochet pink bat with grey wings, beige bat with black wings, or white bat with purple wings. All these crochet bat variations are spooky and all cute. I like the picot edging of the wings and how they are just crocheted from a semi-circle.

This is a 30-minute plushie bat project that will make a perfect last-minute Halloween present for kids. You can also hang your crochet bat from a tree. To make it look spooky, you can also embroider a cross-stitch eye as a replacement for one of the eyes. You can also use the eyes with the eyelashes. Now, continue reading to learn more about this Halloween bat project.

Pattern to Crochet Deep Ridges Pumpkin Amigurumi Plush

This cute crochet bat project is very fast and easy to make – taking only about 15 minutes! It only needs a simple pattern, but shows how you can change the size of your bat just by using different types of yarn. For example, using thick plush yarn makes a large 15-centimeter bat, and thin plush yarn makes a medium 12-centimeter bat.

Also, the regular cotton yarn makes a tiny 8-centimeter bat. It is a fun, quick project that lets you easily make a soft little toy in whichever size you like best.

Materials Needed to Crochet the Plush Bat

  • Yarn: Thin chenille/plush yarn (like Himalaya Velvet or YarnArt Dolce Baby) in two colors: a main color for the body and a contrast color for the wings/ears. Note: You can use any yarn weight (e.g., blanket yarn or cotton), just adjust your hook and eye size accordingly.

  • Hook: 3.0 mm (for thin plush yarn)

  • Eyes: 9mm safety eyes

  • Stitch marker, tapestry needle, and polyfill stuffing

Abbreviations

  • mr = magic ring (the video uses a ch 2, working into the 1st ch)

  • ch = chain

  • sc = single crochet

  • dc = double crochet

  • inc = single crochet increase (2 sc in one stitch)

  • dc inc = double crochet increase (2 dc in one stitch)

  • dec = invisible decrease

  • sl st = slip stitch

  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Rnd 15–17: 1 sc in each st around (3 rounds) [30] Now firmly stuff the body section.

Rnd 18: (3 sc, dec) repeat 6 times [24]

Rnd 19: (2 sc, dec) repeat 6 times [18] Insert safety eyes between Rnds 17 and 18, placing them about 6 stitches apart. Snap on the backings.

Rnd 20: (1 sc, dec) repeat 6 times [12] Finish stuffing the head.

Rnd 21: 6 dec [6] Fasten off: Cut the yarn, thread your needle through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches, pull tight to close the hole, and weave in the end.

Ears (Make 2 in contrast color)

Worked in rows, not rounds.

Row 1: Ch 2, work 2 sc in the 2nd ch from hook [2]

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Work 2 inc [4]

Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Work 4 inc [8].

Edging: Ch 1, turn the piece to work down the side edge. Work 2 sc down the first side, 3 sc into the top point of the ear, and 2 sc up the other side. Across the flat bottom edge (where the increases were), work 4 dec.

Fasten off: Leave a long tail for sewing.

Wings (Make 1 piece in contrast color)

The wings are made as a flat circle, then folded in half.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, work 12 dc into the 1st chain. Sl st to the first dc to join. [12]

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 12 dc inc. Sl st to join. [24]

Rnd 3: Ch 2, (1 dc, dc inc) repeat 12 times. Sl st to join. [36]

Rnd 4: Ch 2, (2 dc, dc inc) repeat 12 times. Sl st to join. [48]

Folding & Joining: Fold the circle entirely in half. Ch 1, and sc through both layers around the curved edge to seam it shut. When you reach the corner, sc across the straight folded edge as well. Sl st back into the beginning of the curved edge.

Scalloped Edge: Ch 3, sl st into the 3rd ch from the hook (this makes a picot), work 1 dc into the SAME base stitch, then work 1 dc into each of the next 3 stitches. Repeat from * to * all the way across the curved edge to create the batwing points.

Fasten off: Leave a very long tail to sew the wings to the back.

Assembly

  1. Ears: Pinch the bottom edges of the ears slightly inward so they have a 3D folded shape, and sew them to the top sides of the head.

  2. Wings: Position the center point of the folded wing piece against the back of the body (around Rnd 8-11). Sew securely in a circular motion so the wings lay nicely behind the bat.

  1. Face: Using a small amount of your contrast yarn, embroider a tiny horizontal nose between the eyes spanning about 3 stitches wide.
