Basic Crochet Stitches for Beginners

Before starting a project, it helps to learn the basic crochet stitches and symbols.

These short forms are used in almost every crochet pattern.

CH (Chain)

To make a CH, start with a slip knot.

  • YO and pull the yarn through the loop on your hook.
  • Each new loop makes one CH.
  • A row of CH stitches is called a foundation chain.

Most crochet projects start with a chain.

SL ST (Slip Stitch)

A SL ST is one the shortest crochet stitches.

  • Insert your hook into the stitch.
  • YO and pull through the stitch and the loop on your hook.
  • An SL ST is often used to join rounds.

It can also move your hook to a new position.

SC (Single Crochet)

The SC is a simple and solid stitch.

  • Insert the hook into the next stitch.
  • YO and pull up a loop.
  • You now have 2 loops on the hook.
  • YO and pull through both loops.

SC is recommended for amigurumi and toys.

HDC (Half Double Crochet)

The HDC is taller than an SC.

  • YO before inserting the hook.
  • Insert hook into the stitch.
  • YO and pull up a loop.
  • You now have 3 loops on the hook.
  • YO and pull through all 3 loops.

DC (Double Crochet)

The DC is one of the most popular stitches especially for crochet bags and more.

  • YO and insert hook into the stitch.
  • YO and pull up a loop.
  • You now have 3 loops on the hook.
  • YO and pull through 2 loops.
  • YO and pull through the remaining 2 loops.

TR (Treble Crochet)

The TR is taller than a DC.

  • YO twice before inserting the hook.
  • Insert hook into the stitch.
  • YO and pull up a loop.
  • YO and pull through 2 loops three times.

## MR (Magic Ring)

The MR is often used to start crochet circles.

Many hats, flowers, and amigurumi begin with an MR.

Make an adjustable loop with the yarn.

Work stitches into the ring.

Pull the yarn tail to close the center hole.

The MR creates a neat and tight circle.

Crochet Circles

A crochet circle needs working in rounds.

  • Start with an MR or a small CH ring.
  • Work stitches into the center.
  • Increase stitches evenly in each round.

This keeps the circle flat.

Crochet circles are used for coasters, hats, bags, and toys.
