UNIQUE granny square AirPods case variation for summer & spring? Let’s learn how to crochet this COOL little strawberry pouch that FEATURES a variation of block stitch to crochet the white seeds of the strawberry as you go + a life-like leaf + hanging loop and string. This is an irresistible crochet coin & money purse as well that you can attach to your spring tote bag as a charm. The color pattern to crochet the 2 granny squares for this strawberry pouch is practically easy, and I will try my best to write each color change clearly.

This 2-in-1 strawberry bag is a part of “Innovative ways to crochet,” and I definitely recommend you crochet one as a gift holder or even as a standalone gift. This variation also changes the way we crochet the classic granny square (working with two yarn colors just like in tapestry and working slip stitch to make the seeds).

While crocheting this strawberry AirPods case may require more yarn (you have to work extra white stitches), crocheting this strawberry pouch is much easier. You can also crochet yours with the rainbow stripes colorwork. Anyway, customization is always up to you, as material recommendations are not always strict. Now, continue reading to learn more about this practical spring project.

Part 2: The Strawberry Leaves & Assembly

Materials for Leaves & Assembly:

  • Green cotton yarn (for the leaves and strap)

  • Completed granny squares (from Part 1)

  • Yarn needle, scissors, sewing pins

The Leaves and Strap Pattern:

Leaf 1:

  • With green yarn, ch 10.

  • Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work: 1 sc.

  • In the next stitch: 1 hdc.

  • In the next 3 stitches: 1 dc in each.

  • In the next 2 stitches: 1 hdc in each.

  • In the last chain: Work 3 sc (this turns your work so you can crochet down the opposite side of the chain).

  • Working down the opposite side: 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in the last st. Join with a sl st to the first stitch.

Leaf 2 (Right Side):

  • From the base of Leaf 1, ch 10.

  • Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work: 1 sc.

  • In the next 2 sts: 1 hdc in each.

  • In the next 3 sts: 1 dc in each.

  • In the next 2 sts: 1 hdc in each.

  • In the last st: 1 sc. Join with a sl st to the base.

The Strap / Closure Loop:

  • From the base, chain 40 to 45 chains (for a long strap) OR chain 3 to 4 chains (if making the back-side closure loop).

  • Join with a sl st back to the base stitch.

Leaf 3 & Leaf 4:

  • Repeat the exact same instructions as Leaf 2 twice more so you have a cluster of leaves.

  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

(Note: You will need to make TWO sets of leaves—one set with a long 40-ch strap for the back square, and one set with a short 3-ch loop for the front square).

Assembly:

  • Attach the Leaves: Take one leaf cluster and pin it to the top corner of one of your granny squares. Using your yarn needle and the long green yarn tail, carefully sew the leaves flat onto the square. Repeat for the second square and second set of leaves.

  • Join the Squares: Place the two squares wrong-sides together (so the leaves are on the outside).

  • Attach yarn with a slip knot at the top edge of one side.

  • Working through both thicknesses (inserting your hook through the back loops of both squares), work a slip stitch, chain 1 in every stitch down the side, across the bottom, and up the other side.

  • When you reach the bottom corners, work (sl st, ch 1) twice in the corner space to help it turn smoothly.

  • Leave the top edge open so you can insert your AirPods! Fasten off and weave in all ends. Attach a metal clip or keyring to the top strap if desired.
