How to Crochet an Amigurumi Pumpkin with Curly Vine

This crochet pumpkin is a quick decor project! Crocheted from the bottom up in continuous rounds, you create a simple sphere that gets stuffed and then shaped with yarn tied vertically around the outside to create those classic pumpkin ridges.

The stem is worked separately using brown yarn and features adorable little curling vines that twist naturally by placing two slip stitches into every chain. It’s a wonderful, versatile design that you can easily size up or down simply by adding or removing increase and decrease rows.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • inc = increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • dec = decrease (sc 2 together)
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • MR = magic ring

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Cotton/polyacrylic blend yarn (or your favorite yarn) in Yellow/Orange for the pumpkin and Brown for the stem. (The creator uses a 50g/160m weight yarn).
  • Hooks: 2.0 mm hook for the main pumpkin and stem base, and a 1.5 mm hook for the curled vines.
  • Extras: Hollowfiber or toy stuffing, scissors, stitch markers, and a long tapestry needle for shaping.

  • Rnd 18: (6 sc, dec) x 6. (42)
  • Rnd 19: (5 sc, dec) x 6. (36)
  • Rnd 20: (4 sc, dec) x 6. (30)Begin stuffing the pumpkin firmly, but leave a little give so you can shape the ridges later.

  • Rnd 21: (3 sc, dec) x 6. (24)
  • Rnd 22: (2 sc, dec) x 6. (18)
  • Rnd 23: (1 sc, dec) x 6. (12)
  • Rnd 24: Dec x 6. (6)
  • Finishing the body: Fasten off, leaving a very long tail (about 50 cm or 20 inches) for shaping the pumpkin.

Shaping the Pumpkin Ridges

  1. Thread the long tail onto a long tapestry needle.
  2. Close the top hole by weaving through the front loops.
  3. Insert the needle straight down through the top center of the pumpkin and pull it out through the bottom center (the magic ring).
  4. Wrap the yarn around the outside of the pumpkin, back up to the top, and insert the needle through the top center again, pulling it down through the bottom center. Pull tight to create a ridge.
  5. Repeat this process 5 or 6 times, spacing the wraps evenly around the pumpkin to create the segmented look.
  6. Once you have created all your ridges, pull the yarn tight, tie a secure knot at the top center, and bury the remaining thread inside the pumpkin.

The Stem and Vines

Use Brown yarn and a 2.0 mm hook.

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in a MR. (6)
  • Rnds 2 – 6: Sc in each st around for 5 rounds. (6)
  • Rnd 7: Inc in each st around. (12)
  • Rnd 8: (1 sc, inc) x 6. (18)
  • Sl st to the first stitch to close the round. Do not fasten off.

Creating the Vines:

Switch to a 1.5 mm hook (this keeps the vines delicate).

  • Vine 1: Sl st into the next st. Ch 17. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 2 sl st into every chain back down the vine. (This forces the vine to curl). Sl st back into the stem base.
  • Space: Make 2 sl sts along the edge of the stem base to move over slightly.
  • Vine 2: Ch 15 (or however long you want). Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 2 sl st into every chain back down. Sl st to the stem base.
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail (about 20 cm) for sewing.

Assembly

Place the stem right over the top center knot of the pumpkin. Using the brown yarn tail and a tapestry needle, stitch the edge of the stem (Rnd 8) securely to the top of the pumpkin. Fasten off and hide the thread inside the pumpkin.
