Today, you will learn how to crochet this spooky jack-o-lantern pumpkin dumpling plushie in a black steamer basket with a crochet handle, too. This is a no-sew crochet dumpling plush featuring a spooky felt face. You have already learned how to crochet the ghost, red horn, and the eyeball dumpling variations. Today, test this simple and easy 30-minute pumpkin dumpling plush made using super bulky yarn.

You can also make a keychain-sized pumpkin dumpling using the thin velvet or cotton yarn. I have also provided a FREE template to cut the iconic, spooky face of the crochet jack-o-lantern pumpkin.

This crochet dumpling is crocheted using the sphere pattern, which makes it easier. The basket pattern also only requires just 16 rounds. You can also crochet your pumpkin dumpling in white for cottage Halloween decorations. Now, continue reading to learn more about this Halloween crochet project for absolute beginners.

Pattern to Crochet the Spooky Food Dumpling Plush

Materials List:

  • Orange Plush yarn (100g / 120m) for the pumpkin dumpling.

  • Black Plush yarn (slightly thicker, 100g / 120m) for the box.

  • Semi-cotton yarn (like YarnArt Jeans) in:

    • Black for the facial details.

    • Orange for closing the top hole and securing the handle.

  • Crochet hook size: 4 mm.

  • Toy stuffing.

  • Yarn needle for sewing/weaving in ends.

  • Scissors.

Abbreviations List

  • MR = Magic Ring
  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = increase
  • dec = decrease
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • ch = chain
  • BLO = back loops only
  • FLO = front loops only R = Round

Pumpkin Dumpling Pattern (Use Orange Yarn):

R1: 8 sc in MR (8).

R2: 8 inc (16).

R3: (1 sc, inc) repeat 8 times (24).

R4: (2 sc, inc) repeat 8 times (32).

R5 to R8 (4 rounds): 32 sc (32)

R9: (2 sc, dec) repeat 8 times (24).

Face Details (Do before closing): Using a yarn needle and a long length of black semi-cotton yarn, embroider the face details between R6 and R8. Sew two triangles for eyes and a wide, blocky jagged smile below them to create the classic Jack-o’-lantern expression shown in the image.

R10: (1 sc, dec) repeat 8 times (16). Stuff the dumpling with toy stuffing (make it soft, not too tight). R11: 8 dec (8).

Creating the top pouch ruffle: R12: Working in FLO only, (inc, 1 sc) repeat all the way around until the end of the round. Cut the yarn and finish with a sl st. Weave in the orange plush end.

Closing the hole: Take a piece of orange semi-cotton yarn on a needle. Weave it through the remaining unworked back loops of R11. Pull the ends tightly to close the hole, tie a knot, and hide the threads inside.

Basket / Box Pattern (Use Black Yarn, Make 2 parts):

R1: 8 sc in MR (8). R2: 8 inc (16). R3: (1 sc, inc) repeat 8 times (24). R4: (2 sc, inc) repeat 8 times (32). R5: (7 sc, inc) repeat 4 times (36). R6: 36 sc in BLO (36). R7 to R8 (2 rounds): 36 sc (36).

For the first part (top lid): Cut the yarn and hide the end. For the second part (bottom base): Do not cut the yarn.

Connecting the Box and Handle:

  1. Connecting the Hinge: Align the bottom base and the top lid. Connect them by crocheting sc stitches through the back loop of the lid and the front loop of the base for approximately 6 stitches to create a secure hinge at the rear. Finish off and hide the black yarn ends.

  2. Attaching the Handle: Using the orange semi-cotton yarn, make a loop on your hook. Attach to the right side of the bottom base part of the container (adjacent to where the hand holds it). Chain 10-12 (or desired length for a small finger loop handle). Slip stitch back into the adjacent stitch to secure. Tie knots and weave in all orange thread ends thoroughly.
