I am a crochet designer, macramé maker and a crafter who also loves doing MATH.

Welcome to another tester call from the “crochet spooky gift plushies” series. Today, learn how to crochet this super-squishy, huggable heart plushie with a spooky jack-o’-lantern face and pumpkin features. In fact, it is designed as a crochet jack-o’-lantern pumpkin heart plushie that you can learn how to crochet with a FREE written pattern here. I have designed it as a UNIQUE LOVE present for fall.

You can also crochet it as a Valentine’s Day present, as the crochet heart plushie made using super bulky yarn is no-sew and works up super fast. It works just like the crochet joined-legs no-sew pattern (joined-lobe pattern).

There is also a longer curly vine and a crochet stuffed pumpkin stem that you can learn to crochet using the traditional methods. As for the crochet spooky felt face, I have also provided a FREE printable template to easily cut the exact face and sew or glue it onto your crochet heart plush. It is also a craft activity along with a Halloween gift tradition activity. So, continue reading for the full crochet plush heart spooky project!

Crochet Instructions

1. The Heart Pumpkin Body (Orange Yarn)

Top Parts (Make 2)

  • R1: 8 sc in a MR (8)

  • R2: 8 inc (16)

  • R3: (1 sc, inc) * 8 (24)

  • R4 – R6: sc around (24)

  • For the 1st Part: Slst into the next st and cut the yarn.

  • For the 2nd Part: Slst into the next st but do not cut the yarn. You will now join the two pieces.

Joining and Main Body

  • R7: Join to the first part with a single crochet (this counts as your first st). Crochet 24 sc around the first part, then 24 sc around the second part (48). Note: Use a “bridge” method (picking up a stitch where the two parts meet) to avoid a gap between parts.

  • R8: sc around (48)

  • R9: (4 sc, dec) * 8 (40)

  • R10: sc around (40)

  • R11: (3 sc, dec) * 8 (32)

  • R12: sc around (32)

  • R13: (2 sc, dec) * 8 (24)

  • R14: sc around (24)

  • R15: (1 sc, dec) * 8 (16)

  • Stuff the body firmly here, ensuring the top “humps” of the heart are well-shaped and plump.

  • R16: sc around (16)

  • R17: (2 sc, dec) * 4 (12)

  • R18: (1 sc, dec) * 4 (8)

  • Add any final stuffing needed to keep the bottom tip of the heart rounded and firm.

  • R19: 4 dec (4)

  • Finish: Fasten off and use a yarn needle to weave through the front loops of the remaining 4 stitches. Pull tight to close the hole and weave in the end.

2. Pumpkin Stem (Brown DK Yarn)

  • R1: 6 sc in a MR (6)

  • R2: (2 sc, inc) * 2 (8)

  • R3 – R12: sc around (8). Work in joined or continuous rounds based on your preference.

  • Finish: Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff the stem lightly if desired.

3. Pumpkin Vine (Green DK Yarn)

  • Row 1: Chain 21 to 24 stitches (depending on how long you want the vine).

  • Row 2: Starting from the 2nd chain from the hook, work 2 sc in each chain stitch across.

  • Finish: The piece will naturally curl as you add the increases. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Face & Final Assembly

  1. Attach the Stem: Pin the brown stem to the top center dip of the heart body. Sew it securely into place using the long yarn tail.

  2. Attach the Vine: Pin the curly green vine right next to the base of the stem. Sew it down so it drapes slightly over one side of the heart.

  3. Create the Face: Print and cut out your spooky face template. Trace the eyes, nose, and mouth onto your black felt and cut them out cleanly.

  4. Secure the Face: Position the felt pieces on the front of the heart pumpkin. Using your sewing needle and black thread, carefully stitch the felt pieces onto the body. Alternatively, you can use a strong fabric glue for a no-sew option!
