The crochet smiling dumpling with a steamer basket is a NEW viral trend in the community. While you can follow any crochet pattern for this KAWAII dumpling toy project, I highly recommend following the one I am sharing today for 3 reasons: it is crocheted as a low-sew dumpling in a steamer with glitter eyes + it is easier& cuter + the steamer has a joined lid! You can crochet this dumpling plushie in less than 45 minutes thanks to the use of super bulky yarn. Great toy for kids’ fake food plays.

You can choose from interesting dumpling plushie colors such as purple, pink, and even blue. This crochet dumpling khinkali plushie is the easiest crochet toy, as this design is much simpler, especially the top part.

You can also crochet your dumpling with black eyes and then embroider the eye whites. You can also attach eyelashes to your dumpling if you are gonna gift it to a little girl. Pattern to Crochet a Dumpling in Basket Plushie

Skill Level: Beginner

The toy has a box that closes and has a handle. It is seven centimeters big. The toy is very easy and fast to knit. The box is also easy to make.

Materials List:

Plush yarn (100g / 120m) for the dumpling.
Plush yarn (slightly thicker, 100g / 120m) for the box.
Semi-cotton yarn (like YarnArt Jeans) in black for the smile and another color for closing the top hole.
Crochet hook size: 4 mm.
Toy stuffing.
Plastic safety eyes (12 mm).
Yarn needle for sewing/weaving in ends.
Scissors.

Abbreviations List:

MR = Magic Ring
sc = single crochet
inc = increase (2 single crochets in one stitch)
dec = decrease (crochet 2 stitches together)
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
BLO = back loops only
FLO = front loops only
R = Round

Dumpling Pattern:

R1: 8 sc in MR (8).
R2: 8 inc (16).
R3: (1 sc, inc) repeat 8 times (24).
R4: (2 sc, inc) repeat 8 times (32).
R5 to R8 (4 rounds): 32 sc (32).
R9: (2 sc, dec) repeat 8 times (24).
Insert safety eyes (12 mm) between R7 and R8, leaving 6 stitches between the eyes.
R10: (1 sc, dec) repeat 8 times (16).
Stuff the dumpling with toy stuffing (make it soft, not too tight).
R11: 8 dec (8).
Creating the top “skirt” ruffle:
R12: Working in FLO only, (inc, 1 sc) repeat all the way around until the end of the round. Cut the yarn and finish with a sl st.
Closing the hole:
Take a piece of semi-cotton yarn on a needle. Weave it through the remaining unworked back loops of R11. Pull the ends tightly to close the hole, tie a knot, and hide the threads inside.

Smile Embroidery:

Take a piece of black semi-cotton yarn on a needle.
Insert the needle to the side of the face and bring it out one row below the eyes in the center.
Make a small “V” shape or curve to form the smile.
Bring the needle back to the starting point, tie knots with the two ends, and hide them inside the toy.

Basket / Box Pattern (Make 2 parts):

R1: 8 sc in MR (8).
R2: 8 inc (16).
R3: (1 sc, inc) repeat 8 times (24).
R4: (2 sc, inc) repeat 8 times (32).
R5: (7 sc, inc) repeat 4 times (36).
R6: 36 sc in BLO (36).
R7 to R8 (2 rounds): 36 sc (36).
For the first part (top lid): Cut the yarn and hide the end.
For the second part (bottom base): Do not cut the yarn.

Connecting the Box and Handle:

Align the bottom base and the top lid.
Connect them by crocheting sc stitches through the back loop of the lid and the front loop of the base for a few stitches (about 5-6 stitches) to create a hinge. Finish off and hide the yarn.
Handle:
Join yarn to the side of the base/lid.
Chain your desired length for the handle.
Join the chain to the opposite side of the box.
Chain 1, turn, and crochet sc back down each chain stitch.
Sl st into the starting side to secure. Cut the yarn and hide all ends inside.
