Thanks for liking the crochet pumpkin from the granny square pattern that much. Today, we do the opposite and learn how to crochet these 2 SUPER ELEGANT solid granny squares with a pumpkin appliqué in the middle. I have both the written pattern and the video tutorial to teach you. Choose from a beige crochet square with green edging and an orange pumpkin in the middle, or a brown square with orange edging and an orange pumpkin in the middle. The variation #2 is my favorite. You can make fall cardigans, bags, tops, sweaters, and even hats using these crochet pumpkins.

And the best part is that this crochet pumpkin granny square is a lot neater and looks 3D than the past designs. It is because you will learn a NICE technique to work the square around teh pumpkin appliqué such that the appliqué stays raised and you don’t distort the shape by working in both loops of stitches.

You can also use this method to work a solid granny square around any crochet appliqué, such as a crochet mushroom appliqué. Couple your pumpkin granny square with a small keyring to turn it into a tote bag charm, and it would look so ELEGANT hanging from it. Pattern to Crochet the Pumpkin Granny Square Applique

This project is a crochet square. The video shows how to make a pumpkin square. This pattern changes the pumpkin into a dog. First, you will make a brown dog face in the center. Next, you will make two dog ears. Then, you will make a cream square around the dog face. You will use yarn and a hook. You will sew a black nose and black eyes at the end. The words in this pattern are simple and exact.

Materials

Brown yarn (for the dog face and ears)
Cream yarn (for the square background)
A small amount of black yarn (for the eyes and nose)
Crochet hook (size matching your yarn)
Stitch marker

Detailed Pattern

The Dog Face Use the brown yarn for this part.

Start: Make a slip knot and chain 6.

Round 1:

Skip the first chain. Work 2 single crochets into the second chain.
In the next 3 chains, work: 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, and 1 single crochet.
In the last chain, make 3 single crochets.
Now, work along the bottom edge of the starting chain. Make 1 single crochet, then 1 half double crochet, and then 1 single crochet into each of the next 2 chains.
You will have 12 stitches. Place a stitch marker in the last stitch to mark the end of the round.

Round 2:

Make a slip stitch into the first stitch. For this round, work into the back loops only.
Make 3 single crochets all into the next stitch.
In the next 3 stitches work: 1 half double crochet, then 1 double crochet, then 1 half double crochet.
In the next stitch, make 3 single crochets all into the same stitch.
Make 1 slip stitch through both loops.
Continue working through the back loops only for the rest of this round.
Make 3 single crochets into the next stitch.
In the next 3 stitches work: 1 half double crochet, then 1 double crochet, then 1 half double crochet.
Finish with 3 single crochets in the last stitch.
You will have 20 stitches.

Round 3:

Start with a slip stitch into the first stitch. For this round, work into the back loops only.
Make 1 single crochet.
In the next stitch, make 2 half double crochets.
In the next stitch, work 1 double crochet.
In the next stitch, make 2 double crochets.
In the next stitch, work 1 double crochet.
In the next 2 stitches, make 2 double crochets in each stitch.

The Dog Ears Use the brown yarn for this part.

Look at the top of the dog face. Find the front loops of Round 3 that were left open.
Count 3 stitches to the left of the top center. Join the brown yarn into that front loop.
Chain 2. Make 2 double crochets into that same stitch. Chain 2, and make a slip stitch back into the same stitch. Fasten off the yarn. This is the first ear.
Count 3 stitches to the right of the top center. Join the brown yarn into that front loop.
Chain 2. Make 2 double crochets into that same stitch. Chain 2, and make a slip stitch back into the same stitch. Fasten off the yarn. This is the second ear.

The Square Background (Round 4) Use the cream yarn for this part. You will work into the back bar of each stitch from Round 3. This pushes the dog face out.

Join the cream yarn to the top right side of the dog face.
Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 3 stitches.
First Corner: In the next stitch, work 1 double crochet, chain 2, and 2 more double crochets all into the same stitch.
Side 1: Work 1 half double crochet into each of the next 5 stitches.
Second Corner: In the next stitch, work 2 double crochets, chain 2, and 1 double crochet all into the same stitch.
Bottom Side: Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 3 stitches. Work 1 treble crochet into the next stitch. Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 3 stitches.
Third Corner: In the next stitch, work 1 double crochet, chain 2, and 2 more double crochets all into the same stitch.
Side 3: Work 1 half double crochet into each of the next 5 stitches.
Fourth Corner: In the next stitch, work 2 double crochets, chain 2, and 1 double crochet all into the same stitch.

Growing The Square (Round 5) Keep using the cream yarn.

Do not chain up. Make 1 single crochet directly into the same stitch, then chain 1. This acts as the first double crochet.
Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 3 stitches.
First Corner: In the chain-two space, make 2 double crochets, chain 2, and 2 more double crochets.
Next Side: Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 9 stitches.
Second Corner: In the chain-two space, make 2 double crochets, chain 2, and 2 more double crochets.
Continue around the square. Make 9 double crochets on each flat side. Make 2 double crochets, chain 2, and 2 double crochets in each corner space.
On the final side, work 1 double crochet into each of the last 5 stitches. Use an invisible join to close the round.

The Border (Round 6) Keep using the cream yarn.

Do not chain up. Make 1 single crochet directly into the same stitch.
Work 1 single crochet into each of the next 4 stitches.
First Corner: In the chain-two space, make 1 single crochet, chain 2, and 1 single crochet.
Next Side: Work 1 single crochet into each of the next 13 stitches.
