Materials
Recommended Yarn: 5-ply milk cotton (Sport weight, approximately 2 mm thickness).
Hook Sizes: 2.75 mm hook for single-strand crocheting; 4.0 mm hook when holding 2 strands together.
Finished Basket Dimensions: Approximately 9.5 cm in diameter and 6 cm in height (excluding the reindeer features). Final dimensions vary depending on yarn weight, hook size, and individual stitch tension.
Back Loop Only (BLO) Single Crochet
Used at the transition from the flat circular base to the vertical basket walls to create a clean, 90-degree fold.
Identify the two loops that form the “V” on top of the previous round’s stitch.
Insert your hook only through the loop farthest away from you (the back loop).
Yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops to complete the single crochet.
Verification: A horizontal ridge (the unused front loops) will form a distinct ring around the outer edge of your circular base.
4. Single Crochet Increase & Invisible Decrease
Increase (Inc): Work two single crochets into the exact same stitch to expand flat circles (such as the basket base or snout).
Invisible Decrease (Inv Dec): Used on amigurumi elements (antlers, snout) to narrow shapes cleanly without gaps.
Insert hook into the front loop only of the first stitch.
Immediately insert hook into the front loop only of the adjacent stitch (2 front loops on hook).
Yarn over and pull through both front loops.
Yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook.
Verification: Increases add visible stitch count without puckering; invisible decreases leave no large gaps or noticeable bumps.
5. Single-Strand Detail Work (Antlers, Ears & Snout)
Worked with the 2.75 mm hook and a single strand of yarn to create precise, smaller reindeer features.
Ears & Antlers: Combined basic stitches (chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet) into short rows or narrow spirals.
Color Changes: Change yarn colors on the final yarn-over of the previous stitch before starting the new color.
