How is the crochet heart worked?
The left and right sides of a crochet heart are separated by a treble crochet bottom. First, we crochet a four treble crochet cluster, then a 3 double crochet cluster, and chain 1. This makes the first side of the heart. Then the same pattern is reversed, that is, the chain 1, 3 double crochet cluster, 4 treble crochet cluster.
Important note: To make a prominent separation between the top of the heart sides, we must slip stitch into the ring. Not the first stitch.
Crochet Heart Pattern: Step-by-Step Instructions
Skill Level: Beginner – Level 2
Stitches Needed: Chain stitch, double crochet, treble crochet.
Technique: Slip Knot
Materials
- Worsted-weight acrylic yarn (or any yarn you prefer)
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
Note: Although I am using macrame cord to crochet this heart, I don’t recommend crocheting using this yarn.

- Step 1: Attach the slip knot to your crochet hook and make 4 chains.

- Step 2: Insert the crochet hook in the first chain and make a slip stitch. This chain-4 and slip stitch start is a beginner alternative to the magic ring.
To make a slip stitch:

- Yarn over and pull a loop on the crochet hook after inserting in the first chain stitch.

- Pull the previously pulled loop through the “slip knot loop” on the crochet hook.

Note: Now that you have the preliminary ring, you will want to work all the stitches by inserting the hook through the hole. For this, grab and pull to widen the hole.

- Step 3: Chain 3 or chain 4. This counts as a treble crochet stitch. I prefer 4 chains due to the macrame yarn and my analysis of turning chains. That is, half treble crochet requires 3 chain stitches.

- Step 4: Work 3 treble crochets into the center of the ring. Tip: As you add more stitches, slide each stitch back along the ring to make room for the new stitches.
To crochet treble crochet, yarn over twice, insert the hook, and pull up a loop on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, pull tjrough two and yarn over again and pull through the last two.

- Step 5: Work 3 double crochets into the ring.
To crochet double crochet, yarn over once, insert the hook, and pull up a loop on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two, yarn over and pull through the last two stitches.

- Step 6: Chain 1, then work 1 treble crochet into the ring (this makes the bottom of the heart).

- Step 7: Chain 1.

- Step 8: Work 3 double crochets into the ring.

- Step 9: Work 3 treble crochets into the ring.
- Step 10: Chain 3 or 4, then make a slip stitch into the center of the ring.

- Step 11: Chain 1 to fasten off. Cut your yarn, leaving a short tail, and pull it through the loop to tighten.
- Step 12: Pull the starting yarn tail to close the center hole. Tie both yarn tails together in a knot at the back, then trim or weave in the ends.
