In the last FEATURED fall crochet tutorial, you learned how to crochet a pumpkin charm that doubles as a treat pouch! Continuing the same idea, this time, learn how to crochet this 2-in-1 acorn charm that again doubles as a pouch with a “slide the cap” opening mechanism. Crochet this acorn pouch for holding dry fruits, an AirPods case, bring it out for Halloween trick-or-treating, or crochet just because it’s fall. Its pattern is pretty similar to an amigurumi acorn.

This time, extras include a long oak leaf that will stay attached to the middle of the slide-through strings. You can either crochet the acorn with the dark brown cap or with the light brown cap. The cap, this time, requires the bobble stitch all around.

Once you learn the “slide the cap” mechanism, you can use that in lip balm holders, fruit pouches, and even a mushroom pouch! For now, let’s crochet this medium-sized acorn pouch that you can also stuff to turn into an acorn softie and pincushion. Following the pattern will be easy, as the tutorial has on-screen instructions. Anyway, continue reading to learn more about this fall acorn project!

Tutorial to Crochet Acorn Pouch with an Oak Leaf

Learn how to crochet the acorn and oak leaf bag charm. First, you make the acorn body using single crochets and decreases, leaving it open to work as a small pouch. Then, you crochet a chain strap. Next, you make the acorn cap using bobble stitches to create a bumpy texture.

Finally, you crochet an oak leaf using half double, double, and treble crochets around a starting chain. After making all of the different parts, you use a tapestry needle to sew the cap to the body strap and attach the leaf to finish the bag charm.

Difficulty Level

Intermediate. Work into the “front loop only” and sew multiple pieces. That’s what this crochet fall project needs. The oak leaf requires combining multiple tall stitches (like half double, double, and treble crochets) in single spaces to create an asymmetrical shape.

Finally, the cap uses a 5-double crochet bobble stitch, which is a complex cluster stitch that can be difficult for beginners to keep tight and neat.

Materials

  • 5-ply milk cotton yarn.

  • 4 mm crochet hook

  • Scissors

  • Tapestry needle

  • Stitch marker

Pattern Abbreviations

The following are the abbreviations used in the

  • ch: Chain

  • sc: Single crochet

  • hdc: Half double crochet

  • dc: Double crochet

  • tr: Treble crochet (referred to as “triple crochet” in the video)

  • inc: Increase

  • dec: Decrease (invisible decrease worked in the front loops)

  • sl st: Slip stitch

  • FLO: Front loop only

Making the Difficult Stitch: The Bobble Stitch

The creator refers to this as the “bobble stitch”. Here is how to make it:

  1. Start by making 5 unfinished double crochets in the exact same stitch. To do this: yarn over, insert your hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through two loops. Leave the final loop on your hook.

  2. Repeat that exact motion 4 more times in the same stitch space.

  3. You will end up with 6 loops on your hook (1 starting loop + 5 loops from the unfinished double crochets).

  4. Yarn over and pull the yarn through all 6 loops at the exact same time.

  5. Finish by placing 1 single crochet in the same stitch to lock the bobble in place.
