If you are a beginner, the classic crochet heart can be your first cute and still easy project. Just by working in two rounds with one yarn color, such a heart can be crocheted in 10 minutes.
You can follow this free crochet basic heart pattern written in US terms for making a customizable flat heart. After that, make heart hair clips, coasters, and a granny square using the same base heart.

How I Worked the Heart Pattern
The classic flat heart pattern is worked in flat rounds using six of basic crochet stitches. To start, you can also use a 4-chain ring, but I used a magic ring and then chain-4 to start my first round. Here is the plan to crochet a basic heart:
- Work chain-4 as turning chains for the treble stitch.
- In round 1, I will crochet the heart by working stitches of different heights.
- In round 2, I will continue working around the heart to make it larger. You can also stop at the first round for crocheting hairclips.
The “center ring” refers to the 4-chain loop.
Finished Size: 5 cm by 4.5 cm (your size might be different)
How to Use Basic Heart
- If you have a crochet amigurumi animal, let it hold this basic heart.
- Add the straps of a halter crochet top.
- Make a crochet bag with a heart granny square by working around this two-round heart.
Materials
To crochet a basic heart, I will suggest the following supplies:
- I used a 2.5mm crochet hook to make a small heart.
- Cotton Yarn (Mine is about 1.5mm thick or fingering weight).
- Use red or pink yarn
Review These Basic Stitches & Abbreviations
The abbreviations I used for the basic heart pattern were simple because the heart pattern itself was simple. Here are those:
- ch: Chain
- sl st: Slip Stitch
- dc: Double Crochet
- tr: Treble Crochet
- st(s): Stitch(es)
- beg: Beginning

Pattern
Make a magic ring.
R1 Right Side: Ch 4. This will add the height for the longest stitch, the treble stitch. Inserting the hook in the ring: work 4 dc, 2 tr. Ch 4, sl st into the ring.
You can make a similar but small heart using half double crochet and single crochet. The idea is the same, just make stitches of different heights.
R1 Left Side: Ch 4. Inserting hook into the ring: 2 tr, 4 dc. This will mirror our pattern so that the heart is symmetric.
Make a slip stitch to join.
R2 Right Side:
Now we will try to make our hearts a little larger. So, we need increases, too.
Ch 4.
1 dc in the same st as join (the top of the ch-4 from R1).
