Crochet My Candy Pop Coaster Pattern for Summer (Sun & Watermelon Version)

I am a crochet designer, macramé maker and a crafter who also loves doing MATH.

Summer is officially HERE (at least that’s what I think about my area), so I needed something last-minute, easy and elegant to decorate for my working table and welcome the NEW season. My brother said: “Why not a COASTER?” Well, clever advise! But I wanted it in a color-combo and FINISH that reflected summer, aesthetic and is practically easy to crochet;

And, I am a crocheter, so I decided to design my own and ended up with this “crochet candy pop coaster” with a chain stitch strap (yup! you can hang it as a mandala decoration or whenever you want to neat up the table!).

You can also call it “SUN & Pastel Pop” coaster as the middle yellow round looks like the sun which is covered by stripes of pastel colors. Well, to inform you early on, you will need a special method of color-changing to make sun points! And today, I will provide you with the FREE pattern to crochet it using both US and UK terms (thank me later!).

Showing it as a mandala!

About my coaster pattern

This is a striped double crochet coaster finished with my favorite, slip stitch edging. While I initially thought to finish it with ONLY pastel colors such yellow, pastel purple and pink, the dark purple complemented so well and I could not resist but to pick that one, too. I have worked it in a magic ring using the macramé cord (I love its shiny finish!).

But you can also crochet it with chain-4 start (I have taught it, already!) and with the cotton or cotton-acrylic blend yarn (well, macramé cord is NOT for all!). Let’s get started, then.

How I made Crochet Candy Pop & Sun Coaster

  • Step 1: First I made two rounds of double crochet in a magic ring using my yellow cord to represent the sun.
  • Step 2: After slip stitching, I made the 3 turning chains as normal and joined the dark purple cord while making my first double crochet of this row before pulling through the last two loops.
  • Note that I don’t prefer this method of changing the color except you are as busy as me for not bothering to closing each round and just testing this coaster. That’s why, I will demonstrate a much neater method below!
  • Step 3: Then, I just made a third round of double crochet increases as normal.
  • Step 4: Switched to the pink yarn while making my first double crochet and made another round as normal.
  • Step 5: At this stage, I wanted to make an edging; so I cut my working yarn and secured my last round.
  • Step 6: I reattached the yarn but the pastel purple color, chain 1 and worked slip stitch edging around.

  • Sun coaster is for mugs
  • Watermelon coaster is for juice glasses

Detailed Coaster & Handle Pattern (Watermelon Version)

Round 1: (Work with light purple yarn or yellow yarn!) In the magic ring, make 2 chains (does not count as a stitch). Then work 12 double crochet stitches in the ring (pinching the ring and its strand tight). To make a double crochet:

  • yarn over, insert the hook into the ring (pulling both its strands tight), pull up a loop.
  • Yarn over again and pull through two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.

Slip stitch in the first stitch to close the round. To make the slip stitch:

  • Insert the hook through both loops of the first stitch (not chain!).
  • Yarn over and pull up a loop.
  • Pull the far loop through the loop previously on the hook.

Now, that we have our sun round in the middle finished, we will switch the color to dark purple. But before that:

  • Pull the hook above while the loop is around the hook to make it longer.
  • Remove the hook from the loop.

  • Now, cut the working end leaving about 3 inches as a tail and insert the strand through the loop and pull tightly to make a knot. (you can refer to other methods for more neatness like removing the hook, inserting from the WRONG side and then pulling the loop through.)

Now to change the color the color to red:

  • Insert the crochet hook through both the top loops of any crochet stitch and hold the yarn in your passive hand.

  • Hold the red yarn with the hook and pull it tightly with your hand.

  • Pull through both the loops on the crochet hook.

  • Yarn over.

  • Pull through the loop on the crochet hook.

  • Now we have changed the color to red, we can work the double crochet round normally!

Note: For the sun and candy coaster, crochet the round 2 using the yellow yarn, too.

Round 2: Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch). Make 2 double crochet stitches (double crochet increase) in each stitch across.

Slip stitch to finish the round. Cut the working strand leaving about 3 inches as a tail and insert the strand through the loop and pull tightly.

Note: For the candy version, you will want to work two more rounds double crochet increase that I have described at the end.

Round 3 (edging):

Now, we will be making the slip stitch edging all around to finish the coaster.

Attach green yarn to any of the stitch and chain 1. Insert hook in the next stitch and make 1 slip stitch. The repeat this pattern:

  • Chain 1
  • Slip stitch in the next stitch.
  • Slip stitch in the last stitch!

Handle: Just chain to any number such as 7 or 8 to make the handle.
