This month’s crocheter’s new favorite decoration is the crochet pop-up coaster that you can crochet in countless variations. Since Christmas and New Year are around the corner, I have decided to first feature this crochet celestial star-and-moon mug coaster tutorial instead of the flower one (which will be next!). When you place the mug over the coaster, the wire stems will pop towards the cup and wrap it beautifully. It is a symbol of 2027.

The circular base is worked in four rounds of double crochets using double-stranded navy blue yarn, then edged with a light blue ruffled border worked in the front loops.

Three miniature yellow stars and two white crescent moons are crocheted, accented with stitched sleepy eyes and blush. Craft wire wrapped in navy yarn is hot-glued inside each pair of shapes to create flexible stems. Finally, the stems are sewn into the base and bent upward to snugly cradle a drinking glass.

Difficulty Level: Advanced Beginner

Why:
The crochet portions rely on foundational stitches (chains, slip stitches, single, half-double, and double crochets worked in a magic ring). However, it requires handling small-scale appliqué pieces, working through the front loop only (FLO), wrapping delicate craft wire with yarn, hot-glue assembly, and structural attachment to the base.

Materials

  • Yarn: 5-ply milk cotton yarn (navy blue, light blue, yellow, white, and a scrap of dark brown for eyes)

  • Crochet Hooks: 4.0 mm (coaster base) and 2.5 mm (stars, moons, edging)

  • Galvanized Wire: 0.4 mm diameter (approx. 20 cm per stem)

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • Stitch marker

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

  • Pink powder blush & makeup brush

Pattern Abbreviations

Detailed Stitch Guide (Special / Technique Stitches)

  • Front Loop Only (FLO):
Look at the top “V” of the stitch. Instead of inserting your hook underneath both strands, insert your hook from the bottom up underneath only the front loop (the strand closest to you), leaving the back loop untouched, and complete your stitch as normal.
