I am a crochet designer, macramé maker and a crafter who also loves doing MATH.

This crochet Alien plushie pattern is part of my brand-new “crochet Alien-themed foods and buddies” plushie series. Today, we are crocheting this oh-so-cute Alien baby mushroom buddy plushie with a FREE written pattern for beginners. The crochet baby mushroom amigurumi variations have been one of my last year’s most community-liked amigurumi tutorials.

So, for this year’s cosplay festival, I have designed this small baby mushroom Alien using the traditional baby mushroom base pattern.

I am hoping to bring more baby mushroom variations if you show love for this one. We will again be using the black felt to make the iconic Alien eyes. You can also crochet your Alien mushroom using purple, red, and even blue!

Pattern Notes

  • The plush body and hat are worked in joined rounds from the top down.

  • At the end of each joined round, join with 1 sl st into the first stitch of the round, then ch 1 to begin the next round.

  • Tight Seam Technique: Use the smaller 3.0 mm support hook to make the slip stitch and chain 1 as tight as possible at the end of each round, then switch back to the 4.0 mm hook for standard stitches.

  • Always work the first single crochet of each round into the same stitch as the slip stitch.

Pattern Instructions

1. Alien Mushroom Hat

Use Alien Green plush yarn and 4.0 mm hook.

  • Round 1: Make 6 sc into a MR. Join round with 1 sl st, ch 1. [6]

  • Round 2: 6 inc. Join round with 1 sl st, ch 1. [12]

  • Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) × 6 times. Join round with 1 sl st, ch 1. [18]

  • Round 4: (1 sc, 1 inc, 1 sc) × 6 times. Join round with 1 sl st, ch 1. [24]

  • Rounds 5–6: 1 sc in each st around. Join round with 1 sl st, ch 1. (2 rounds total) [24]

  • Round 7: In FLO: (3 sc, 1 inc) × 6 times. Join round with 1 sl st, ch 1. [30] (Place a stitch marker into the first unworked back loop of this round to locate it later).

  • Round 8: (2 sc, 1 inc, 2 sc) × 6 times. [36]

Cut the yarn, leaving a short tail. Finish the edge invisibly:

  1. Thread tail onto tapestry needle.

  2. Insert needle under both loops of the first stitch of the round from back to front.

  3. Insert needle back down into center/front loop of the last stitch made.

  4. Pull gently to form a faux stitch, weave tail inside hat, and trim.

2. Alien Mushroom Body

Turn hat upside down with wrong side facing up. Locate the 24 remaining back loops from Round 7.

Insert 4.0 mm hook into the last back loop of the round (adjacent to the marked back loop). Pull up a loop of Light Green plush yarn, make a slip knot, and tie yarn tails inside to secure.

  • Round 9: Work 1 sc into the marked first back loop. Work 1 sc into each remaining BLO around. Join with 1 sl st, ch 1. [24]

  • Rounds 10–11: 1 sc in each st around. Join with 1 sl st, ch 1. (2 rounds total) [24]

  • Round 12 (Upper Arms): 7 sc, 1 BO, 8 sc, 1 BO, 7 sc. Join with 1 sl st, ch 1. [24]

  • Round 15 (Lower Feet): 8 sc, 1 BO, 6 sc, 1 BO, 8 sc. Join with 1 sl st, ch 1. [24]

Push all 4 bobbles outward from inside using the back of your crochet hook so arms and feet pop out.

3. Antennae (Make 2)

  • Round 5: [1 sc, dec] 2 times. [4]

  • Rounds 6–12: 1 sc in each st around. (7 rounds total) [4]

Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch (20 cm) tail for sewing onto. Do not stuff.

Stitch Breakdown & Abbreviations

4. Body Closing & Stuffing

  • Round 16: (1 sc, 1 dec) × 8 times. Join with 1 sl st, ch 1. [16]

  • Stuffing: Stuff firmly with polyester fiberfill, shaping head and body evenly.

Cut yarn leaving an 8-inch (20 cm) tail, pulling working loop through.

Cinch Opening Closed:

  1. Thread tail onto tapestry needle.

  2. Weave needle through FLO of all 8 stitches.

  3. Pull firmly to cinch hole closed. Tie a small knot, insert needle into center, pull out through back, trim, and hide tail inside.

Assembly & Face Finishing

Felt Eyes

  1. Cut Eye Shapes: Cut 2 large oval or oversized alien-almond shapes from black felt (approx. 15–18 mm tall). Cut tiny white felt circles or specs for pupil reflections.

  2. Placement: Position eyes on the front face between Rounds 10 and 12, spaced 2 to 3 stitches apart and centered between the arms.

  3. Attachment: Secure felt eyes using fabric glue, or stitch them along the edges with black thread. Glue the white reflections onto the black felt.

Antennae Attachment

  1. Position the two antennae on top of the mushroom cap over Rounds 2–3, spaced about 2 stitches apart.

  2. Thread the sport yarn tail onto a tapestry needle and sew antennae securely to the top of the cap.

  3. Knot inside cap and bury yarn ends.

Alien Spots & Cheeks

  • Mushroom Cap Spots: Thread tapestry needle with bulky yarn (or cut small circular felt shapes) in bright yellow, pink, or white. Stitch or glue 5–7 random spots across the red/green mushroom cap. Tie tails on the inside of the cap and trim.

  • Alien Blush: Thread tapestry needle with purple or pink yarn. Embroider a short horizontal line right below each felt eye (between Rounds 11 and 12). Knot and tuck ends inside body.
