These instructions will show you how to crochet the basic V-stitch for absolute beginners. This stitch is worked by making a double crochet, chain stitch, and another double crochet in the same stitch.
It differs from other V-stitch variations in that we shall skip two stitches after each V-stitch, which makes a beautiful mesh texture. This is what you dream of for market and beach tote bags. You will love it even more by changing the color after each row.
Because it is one of the FASTEST stitches, projects like lacy tops and blankets will use this V-stitch variation. Many of these beautiful projects have been discussed here already.
Later, you can also learn the cluster V-stitch or an alternative V-stitch (the one that leaves fewer holes). In fact, you can crochet the V-stitch with almost any stitch. That is puff V-stitch and shell V-stitch, and more. So, follow through with me in this tutorial.
My Experience with V-stitch
Because I used macrame cord for crocheting this V-stitch swatch and tried it pretty early-on, I cannot say it turned out to be beautiful. I will soon show you my latest swatch, which would be way neater. I also recommend starting with a single crochet foundation and working above the back bump of the chain stitch if you wanna stick to traditional start.
From the difficulty perspective, the only confusing part was identifying the V-holes and skipped-stitch holes.
Because it requires working succeeding rows in V-holes, you must be careful and take your time. Overall, it is definitely one of the easiest stitches and a must-try.
Crochet V-stitch: Step-by-Step Instructions
Difficulty: Beginner – Level 2
Stitch Multiple: 3 (Chain any multiple of 3)
Non-Swatch Pattern: (1 Double Crochet, Chain 1, 1 Double Crochet) all worked into the same stitch or space.
Stitch Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- dc: double crochet = tr: treble crochet in UK terms
V-Stitch Pattern
Attach the slipknot to your crochet hook and crochet chains in a multiple of 3. I probably chained 15 for this sample swatch.
Row 1
- First V-Stitch: Skip the first 3 chains and in the 4th chain from your crochet hook, work the first V-Stitch into that chain.
So, yarn over and insert the hook above the back bump of the chain stitch.
Note: Whether you work through both the top and bottom loops or just any of them depends on your pattern instructions. So, be sure to check the beginning instructions of the pattern you are following.
- Complete the double crochet by yarning over, pulling up a loop, yarning over, pulling through two, yarning over, and pulling through the last two.
- Yarn over.
- Pull through the loop on the hook to make a chain stitch. This will be used as a separator for the double crochet. Try to make it a little wider.
- Make another dc in the same stitch.
- Continue: Skip the next 2 chains. Work a V-Stitch (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) into the next chain.
- Repeat: Skip 2 chains, then V-Stitch in the next. Do this all the way across.
- Finish Row: When you reach the last chain, you will have 2 chains left. Skip one and work 1 Double Crochet into the very last chain.
Row 2 (The Repeat Row)
This is the row you will repeat for the rest of your V-stitch project.
- Turn: Chain 2 or chain 3 and turn your work.
- Work the V: Identify the “Chain 1 space” in the center of the V-Stitch from the row below. Work a new V-Stitch (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) directly into that middle space.
- Repeat: Leap straight into the next V-Stitch’s chain space and work another V-Stitch. Continue this across the row.
- Finish Row: Work 1 Double Crochet into the top of the turning chain from the previous row.
How to Change Colors
To get a clean color swap at the end of a row:
- Start your last Double Crochet as normal.
- When you have two loops left on your hook, drop the old color.
- Pick up your new color and pull it through those last two loops.
- Cut the old yarn, leaving a long tail (about 6 inches) to weave in later.
